TikTok username checker
Type a username to see if it is free on TikTok. The checker looks the @handle up on TikTok and gives you one of three answers: taken, available, or could not verify.
It never guesses. TikTok sometimes blocks automated lookups, and when that happens you get an honest "could not verify" with a link to check the profile yourself, not a green tick that turns out to be wrong after you have built a brand on it.
TikTok username rules
- Between 2 and 24 characters.
- Letters, numbers, underscores and periods only. No spaces or other symbols.
- It cannot end with a period.
- You can change it once every 30 days, and changing it changes your profile link.
The checker applies the same rules, so if a name breaks one of them it tells you why before looking it up.
If the username you want is taken
Pick one variant and use it everywhere, rather than a different spelling on every platform. A few patterns that keep the name recognisable:
- Add a short suffix:
name_hq,name.official,name.app. - Add a verb in front:
getname, tryname, joinname. - Use an underscore or period between words:
lumen_kit,lumen.kit.
Before you commit, check the variant on Instagram, X, YouTube and the .com as well. account.name checks a name across domains and 27 platforms in one search, so you can see the whole picture before claiming anything.
How to claim or change your TikTok username
- Open TikTok and go to Profile.
- Tap Edit profile, then Username.
- Type the new username. TikTok shows a check mark when it is available.
- Tap Save.
Remember the 30-day limit: once you save, you are committed to that username for a month.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if a TikTok username is available?
Type the username into the checker above. It looks the handle up on TikTok and tells you whether it is taken, free, or could not be verified. You can also open tiktok.com/@username in a browser: a profile page means it is taken.
What characters can a TikTok username have?
Letters, numbers, underscores and periods, between 2 and 24 characters. A username cannot end with a period, and spaces and other symbols are not allowed.
How often can I change my TikTok username?
Once every 30 days. Changing it also changes your profile link, so update anywhere you have shared the old one.
Can I take a username someone else has given up?
Not straight away. When someone changes away from a username, TikTok holds it for a short period before anyone else can add it to an account. Check again later.
Why does the checker say it could not verify a username?
TikTok sometimes blocks automated lookups. Rather than guess, account.name says it could not verify and links you to the profile URL so you can check by eye. It never reports a taken username as available.
Is a TikTok username the same as a nickname?
No. Your username is your unique @handle and profile link. Your nickname is the display name shown on your profile; it can be up to 30 characters and changed once every 7 days, and other people can use the same one.
